Agriculture is the Primary Front:
Photographs of Vietnam by Emma Alexander
Images from my recent trip to Vietnam. These were exhibited at Tin Roof Arts Collective in Dundee at the start of August 2014.
The title for this show originates from the agricultural Vietnamese Communist propaganda posters, where the people are informed to push for ‘Farming Improvement to Improve your Country’, to ‘Grow more Apples and Bananas to Grow our Exports’ and ‘That Agriculture is the Primary Front’, messages resonating with the belief that produce is prosperity.
The extent and determination of this ethos is prolific from the cities where every road side has been accosted for the growth of herbs and vegetables, to the mountainous regions where the architectural quality of the tiered landscape is dictated by their need of more land for paddy fields and a huge range of agriculture. The vast task to create this epic landscape resonates with the strength and determination of these Hill tribe people.
As an avid ‘grower’ and buddying ‘allotmenteer’ I’m really interested in how we relate to our food and produce, and how its production influences the landscape around us. The Photographs in this exhibition show Images from the northern border region of Sapa to the markets of Hanoi following the produce along its route to retail.
